Intertextuality is the intentional or unintentional shaping of a text's meaning by another text, whether through deliberate compositional strategies like quotation, allusion, calque, plagiarism, translation, pastiche, or parody or by interconnections between similar or related works perceived by a text's audience or reader.
The plot of this music video is based on the novel and film adaptations of Shakespeare's classic love story "Romeo and Juliet." The video aims to modernize the story by making minor changes to the original plot. The visuals and song lyrics inform the audience that the video is a parody of the well-known love story of 'Romeo and Juliet.' By relating the two mediums of the story together to draw comparisons between them, Taylor Swift uses this plot in her music video to grab the attention of the audience. The well-known plot is also likely to attract a larger audience. The song's lyrics frequently mention "Romeo," particularly in the chorus, which says, "Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone."
Last Friday Night by Katy Perry (TGIF)
One of the intertextual references in 'Katy Perry- Last Friday Night' is that Rebecca Black appears in the music video, who was previously known for recording her own song and video for her original 'Friday.' Because her video was so well-known at the time, the audience was likely to recognize her right away. This was done as a tribute to the artist.
Kevin McHale and Darren Criss, both of 'Glee,' are among the cast members. The show was extremely popular at the time of recording, and it is likely that many of the target audience members were teenagers.
In addition, the music video features the 90s band 'Hanson,' who are best known for their song "MMMBop." The pop party theme and narrative in the music video are enhanced by this. Similarly, the mother is played by actress and musician 'Debbie Gibson' in the music video.
Vogue - Madonna
The song title for Madonna's music video contains an intertextual reference to the multi-national well-known fashion magazine 'Vogue.' Furthermore, the music video contains numerous references to classic Hollywood stars who embodied the look that 'Marylin Monroe' was attempting to recreate. As a result, Madonna's style is influenced by Marylin Monroe's (specifically, the iconic white dress she wore) and other Hollywood stars. Madonna is shown wearing a similar white dress with a low neckline, as well as having blonde hair, flawless skin, and bright lips, as Monroe did.
A famous Art-History reference is also shown in the video as an intertextual reference. The music video was inspired by the 'Art Deco' period in the 1920s and 1930s, according to the music video director. The video, which was shot in black and white and has a slight photographic and film look to it, crosses multiple media platforms with similar themes (cross-media convergence). As a result, the video appears to be quite different.
Last Friday Night by Katy Perry (TGIF)
Furthermore, by including a credit sequence at the end of the music video, the music video can be seen as incorporating intertextuality from the film industry.
The director claimed that the video was inspired by the 1980s film 'Sixteen Candles,' which depicted Samantha's life as rapidly deteriorating. The sixteen-year-old has a crush on the most popular boy in school and has to constantly dismiss nerdy 'Ted's affections. This is mirrored in the music video, which features Katy Perry hosting a party where nerdy 'Everett' tries to catch her attention while competing with popular jock '.
Why is intertextuality used in music videos ?
Intertextuality in music videos refers to the incorporation of references from books, television shows, and films into the video. This can be accomplished through the use of scenery, costumes, and other means. The effect of using intertextuality is that it aids the audience in recognizing the connections between different texts, which further engages the audience.
